The modern and cosmopolitan town of Argostoli is quite busy during the summer season offering a plethora of interesting features and activities. The beautifully paved coastal road promenade is boarded by palm trees and colorful pebbles from the sea. The road ends at the small ferry quay where boats connect to the town of Lixouri every half an hour and fishing boats moor. The central square of the town called Plateia Valianou (Vallianos Square) is a large and pleasant square lined by many restaurants, cafes and bars.

During the evenings, the square fill's with locals who are really warm and friendly. In Argostoli, one can notice the traditional way of life. The pedestrian Lithostroto Street (Cobbled Street) is the main street of the capital filled with all kinds of shops. There one can admire the beautiful church of Saint Spyridon and the interesting clock tower of Campana Square. Around its outskirts are a range of restaurants that cover all tastes and budgets. Right above the square is one of the town's nicest sights, the lush Botanical Garden.

Location

Activities in Argostoli

  • Mt. Enos: the ‘Black Mountain’

The highest mountain in the Ionian, Enos takes its name from the black pine (Abies Cephalonica) that once covered it completely and grows nowhere else. It has been a national park since 1962, known for its wealth of wild flowers. It’s also home to a special breed of pony, Equus cabalus.

  • Levitating in the depths of a cave

A 40 minute drive from Argostoli you will find the 50 mesmerising shades of turquoise in the underground Lake Melissani. Get into the boat for a tour and you’ll think you’re floating somewhere in space. With sunlight filtering in from above, the cavern reminds you of a cathedral. And when your boatman bursts into song, the first lilting notes of an Italianate cantata echoing around the walls, you’ll realize that this is a truly heavenly experience.

  • Cave of Drogarati

Drogarati cave lies in the same area as the famous Melissani lake, just 3 km outside Sami. It was discovered only 300 years ago when an earthquake destroyed part of the cave and thus created an entrance. Like Melissani cave, also Drogarati was explored by the speleologists Anna and Yiannis Petrochilos. They entered the cave with ropes and ladders.

According to speleologists, Drogarati cave is over 100 million years old. Keeping that in mind and looking at the impressive formations, you can try and figure out how old they are: they grow approximately 1 cm in 100 years. Speleologists found an extension of the cave which is not approachable. But it is believed that there is a connection to several other caves in the area.
